Stony Brook University is New York State’s flagship public university and the state’s top-ranked public institution, recognized nationally for academic excellence, research, social mobility, and innovation. As a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), Stony Brook combines the strengths of a leading research institution with a mission rooted in public access, opportunity, and impact. Its academic enterprise is complemented by Stony Brook Medicine, Long Island’s only public academic medical center, creating a distinctive environment where education, research, healthcare, and community engagement intersect.
Today, Stony Brook is entering an ambitious new chapter under the leadership of President Andrea Goldsmith. With the University’s endowment growing from approximately $400 million to nearly $1 billion in just three years, momentum is building around a bold strategic vision designed to elevate Stony Brook’s national and global reputation. The University is seeking leaders who can help translate this extraordinary institutional trajectory into lasting philanthropic investment and sustained impact.

The Opportunity
The Vice President for Advancement joins Stony Brook University as it enters a bold new chapter.
Reporting directly to President Andrea Goldsmith, serving on the President’s Cabinet, and acting as Executive Director of the Stony Brook Foundation, this leader will help shape both the University’s philanthropic future and its broader institutional strategy. With a new comprehensive campaign on the horizon, the Vice President will have the uncommon opportunity to establish campaign priorities, define ambitious fundraising goals, and partner closely with the President to transform institutional vision into philanthropic success.
Working collaboratively with deans, faculty, board members, and senior administrators, this executive will strengthen fundraising capacity across the University while cultivating transformational relationships with donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Success will require a strategic leader who can inspire high-performing teams, foster a culture of collaboration and transparency, and position Advancement as an integrated, data-informed function aligned with Stony Brook’s long-term aspirations.
The ideal candidate brings experience leading comprehensive campaigns, securing transformational gifts, and serving as a trusted institutional partner capable of advancing one of the nation’s fastest-rising public research universities.
