Why Use an Executive Search Firm?

Search firms specializing in nonprofit recruitment have a deep understanding of the nonprofit sector and its wide range of organizational and leadership contexts. Executive search leaders can advise on position expectations and reporting structures, understand functional expertise that might make or break a placement’s success, and tap into extensive and unique networks to find the right candidate for your specific needs.

As your trusted partner, your consultants bring critical knowledge of nonprofit hiring processes and best practices and are expert guides in competitive hiring markets. This includes informing early engagement of community members, probing position nuances that guide candidate selection, framing interview and site-visit plans, designing a candidate review that reduces bias and promotes equity, and supporting your negotiation, offer, and onboarding plans.

By probing specific client needs and candidate qualifications, an executive search firm offers market and third-party insights that are often difficult to discern in-house. You also have the assurance of an advisor and guide through roadblocks that may arise in competitive hiring. As the 2020—21 pandemic unfolded, for instance, Lindauer’s clients described the firm’s experience as invaluable in continuing to make critical hires in virtual and hybrid contexts and to adjust to shifting candidate expectations. With a toolkit of best practices and a wealth of experience, our expert services ensure that you successfully hire top talent that will shape your mission impact for years to come.

Our Process Sets Us Apart

A Culture That Brings Out the Best

Your Search Consultant is your contact, but your organization benefits from the support of our entire team as we share recruitment strategies.

Consistent Communication

We ensure regular meetings with you to provide status updates, address questions from the market, and devise personalized solutions.

Collaboration on Every Search

We move urgently, but understand searches are best conducted with time and attention. We work to take candidates through their own considerations and to vet qualifications with care.

A Process that Works

Our search process is key to our success, with four distinct phases to identify the right match for your organization the first time.

Phase 1

Research and Strategy

At the start of your search, your Search Team interviews key stakeholders to gain insight into the history, culture, context, and ambitions of your organization and the most important aspects and nuances of the position. These early conversations ensure alignment, enable Lindauer to represent you well in the market, and engage those who will influence your new leader’s success.

Lindauer and your hiring leader or Search Committee review the proposed timeline and agree on a schedule for updates. To ensure momentum and drive pace in demanding markets, dates are set for your Resume Review and later interview rounds.

Lindauer creates a comprehensive prospectus that includes the position description and highlights of organizational culture, structure, history, and ambitions. This primary sales tool is supported by a marketing strategy tailored to your search. We identify benchmark, peer, and aspirational institutions and high-potential recruitment channels to build our list of potential candidates and resources.

Phase 2

Market Launch and Outreach

Lindauer’s personal, strategic outreach to resources and candidates is paramount to identify, inform and attract the most promising candidates. To create momentum and ensure your organization’s brand and strategy are current in the market, Lindauer launches and promotes your search across a range of digital and social channels, on our website, and in targeted professional networks and meetings.

Leading candidates are identified through rigorous interviews designed to evaluate how well they meet skill requirements and to ensure interest and readiness. At strategic points in the process, Search Consultants meet candidates, either in person or by videoconference, for deeper, detailed interviews and vetting. In advance of Resume Review candidate information is shared on a password-protected, web-based portal to ensure confidentiality.

Phase 3

Resume Review and Candidate Selection

Regular update meetings with your Search Team keep you connected and aligned. Once a cohort of qualified candidates is identified through outreach and interviews, you and your Lindauer Search Team convene for Resume Review. Through a process carefully focused on competencies to reduce bias, you select candidates for first round interviews. Lindauer shares client interview tools and customized feedback methods, as well as leading practices to help you design a productive interview, visit, recruitment, and selection strategy, whether virtual, in-person, or hybrid approaches are needed.

Phase 4

Client Interview and Final Stages

In advance of meeting candidates for your Client interviews, all interviewers receive a package for each candidate containing a resume and personal statement. Most clients bring finalists back for a comprehensive second or final round of interviews or other community interactions to inform the hiring decision.

Lindauer conducts education verifications for all finalists, arranges additional background checks upon request, and provides in-depth written references for final candidates to shape a 360-degree view. Your Search Team continues to support you through all stages of the offer and negotiation, to ensure a successful placement.
