The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), established in 1930 and home to Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer, Kurt Gödel, among other luminaries, is one of the international community’s leading centers for curiosity driven research. 30 permanent faculty members, 220 visiting scholars (“Members”), and an alumni body of more than 8,000 scholars has yielded 33 Nobel Laureates and 41 of the 56 Field Medalists. On 589 acres in Princeton, New Jersey, the Institute’s $780 million endowment supports programs in Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies. Among the several gifts made in the 2017 academic year were $500,000 awards from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Carnegie Foundation of New York, $1 million from the local Friends group, and a $17 million commitment from a former Member.
The Opportunity
The Institute for Advanced Study is seeking a strategic thinker
and collaborative leader who is ready to serve as
Director of External
Relations and Strategic Communications
. The Director will develop a robust
media strategy, creating press relationships and opportunities for IAS faculty
and scientists, and develop comprehensive short-term and long-term marketing
and communication plans for the organization. Reporting to the Chief
Development Officer, the ideal candidate will be a gifted storyteller and
ambassador with past success as a spokesperson and at least 10 years of
experience in communications, media relations, advertising or a related field.
