Chief Development Officer

United Way of Mass Bay and Merrimack Valley , Boston, Massachusetts

United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley is a locally governed and independently operated United Way with a mission to reduce obstacles that prevent individuals from reaching their full potential. Focused on driving long-term systemic solutions that the communities UWMB serves can embrace, it targets efforts in the areas of child and youth development, housing, and workforce development.

UWMB is taking steps to form a national movement to create sustainable systemic change with visible and measurable results and is eager for its new Chief Development Officer to help build, inspire, and orchestrate a development operation that is as extraordinary as its mission.

The Opportunity

Seeking a change agent to help build a more racially, ethnically, and economically just region, UWMB is looking for a CDO who is also an accomplished fundraiser to manage a team of 40 professionals responsible for raising at least $50 million annually. As a member of the Senior Management team, the CDO will have a demonstrated capacity for leadership and should possess significant experience in environments of change with a track record of accomplishment, credibility, and respect. The successful candidate will bring a recognized degree of operational excellence, fundraising ability, convening power, and practical experience within and/or working across nonprofit, governmental, and business sectors.

The Chief Development Officer will know how to build robust relationships with boards, volunteers, colleagues, and constituents and to articulate and achieve ambitious goals that will address the challenges many face in the Boston-area communities. They will have exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to represent the United Way effectively to diverse audiences. The CDO must possess a desire to explore new ideas and approaches to solving problems and creatively and strategically address the old and the new ways donors want to leverage their philanthropy.
