Seven Inspired Questions to Start Conversations

Does your job require a great deal of socializing with new people? Are you looking to expand your social circle? Or simply become an exceedingly interesting person?

How many times have you tried to get to know someone new with the same tired openers, from “what do you do?” to “where are you from?” You will get more mileage asking open-ended questions and putting the spotlight on the other person.

In “Seven Questions Interesting People Always Ask in Conversations,” Marcel Schwantes, Founder and Chief Human Officer of Leadership From the Core, offers some more inspiring starter queries for you. Here are some of those Schwantes suggests:

  • What’s your story?
  • What was the highlight of your day?
  • What is one of your most defining moments in life?
  • What book has influenced you the most?
  • What was your dream job growing up?
  • Why did you choose your profession?

Broadening the phrasing of your question can lead the conversation into new and unexpected territories. This technique can also help you to get to know the person at a deeper level.

And remember the general guidelines for keeping people engaged: Be positive, “show emotions, laugh at people’s jokes, smile when they smile, and make light of awkward situations,” Schwantes says.
