Emotional Intelligence and Leadership

Intelligence is an important attribute for a leader. Research has demonstrated, however, that emotional intelligence is what really makes a leader exceptional.

According to “Are You Emotionally Intelligent? Here’s How to Know For Sure,” 90% of leading performers demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence encompasses those factors related to how well a person understands themselves and their social setting, and how s/he responds to surrounding circumstances.

Travis Bradberry’s article in Inc.com explores some of the most important traits common among people with high emotional intelligence. These factors include:

  • Having a strong understanding of oneself — A person with high emotional intelligence can readily identify his/her feelings, strengths and weaknesses, and moments when negativity could become a barrier.
  • Limiting the impact of others — Leaders of this kind can keep the negative effects of others at bay. They approach conflict with rational arguments, instead of emotion. They feel in control of their own happiness and they do not allow others to impact their positivity.
  • Focusing on self-care — These successful individuals don’t dwell on mistakes and are able to take time to relax.
