The Union of Concerned Scientists grew out of a desire to direct the power of scientific research away from military applications and towards improving environmental and social problems. In 1969, scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology launched their effort to use rigorous science to implement innovative practical solutions to the world’s problems. Scientists and engineers at the Union are currently engaged in projects in the areas of clean energy, clean vehicles, food and agriculture, global warming, nuclear power and nuclear weapons. They aim to improve scientific integrity in government, strengthen science-based public protections and to combine their voices with advocates, educators, business leaders and citizens for a healthier planet and safer world.
