American Friends of Cancer Research (AFCR) is organized to support large-scale, global research collaborations that catalyze breakthroughs in understanding cancer, leading to new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. AFCR is focused on supporting Cancer Grand Challenges, an initiative designed to spur ambitious research that is unbounded by institutional discipline or geography. Founded by Cancer Research UK and the US National Cancer Institute, Cancer Grand Challenges offers $25 million awards to unite the world’s best researchers to make significant strides in cancer research and improve cancer survival worldwide.
The Opportunity
The inaugural Chief Development Officer (CDO) at American Friends of Cancer Research plays a pivotal role in addressing the global challenge of cancer by spearheading fundraising and business development activities to support the Cancer Grand Challenges initiative. Tasked with being the primary architect of a U.S.-based strategy to generate income, the CDO will establish and lead a team responsible for designing, planning, and executing this comprehensive strategy. A seasoned philanthropic fundraiser and business development professional, the CDO will work closely with the leadership of Cancer Grand Challenges, building robust relationships with an international community of scientific advisors and funded researchers. The role involves identifying and engaging potential partners, soliciting major and principal gifts, and developing a diverse donor base. The CDO will be integral to the growth of the Cancer Grand Challenges initiative, requiring a highly motivated and entrepreneurial individual willing to collaborate across stakeholders and contribute to a pioneering global initiative.
The key responsibilities of the CDO include overseeing all fundraising and business development activities for American Friends of Cancer Research, developing and implementing an ambitious five-year strategy, building a portfolio of potential partners and donors, leading a team to support income-generating activities, and collaborating closely with Cancer Research UK. The CDO will also contribute to the development of an annual giving program, engage with external stakeholders, and work with the communications team to raise awareness of Cancer Grand Challenges. With a background in major gift fundraising and research partnerships, the ideal candidate possesses excellent communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate complex situations diplomatically. The CDO will play a crucial role in driving transformative breakthroughs in cancer research, contributing to the initiative’s vision, mission, and objectives.
