Successful Hiring Strategies

Adam Bryant of The New York Times recently addressed a challenge faced by every organization: How does one make the best hiring choices? It is a question he has asked nearly 500 managers – and are the useful strategies he has developed to consider.

Among Bryant’s top recommendations:

  1. Shake up the job interview process. Routine questions and approaches can yield routine answers and don’t give a true picture of the candidate. Instead, use creativity and think about how to incorporate a team of employees.
  2. Get away from the conference table and watch the candidate’s interactions with others in the office.
  3. Tour the office and get a sense of how curious and engaged the candidate seems in the day-to-day of the work.

Bryant’s article “How to Hire the Right Person” offers additional tips as well as some recommended interview questions. He believes that unusual questions can help a candidate drop some defenses. One such example was, “If everybody is in the top 5 percent of the world at some skill, what is yours?”

Finally, it is important to be prepared to answer the candidate’s questions. Ask what he or she wishes to know. This will give a sense of whether or not they have done their research and if the candidate is truly enthusiastic about the job opportunity.
