For 60 years, the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University (IHS) has supported and partnered with scholars advancing the ideas that underlie the Good Society, a tolerant and pluralistic society in which individuals and communities thrive in a context of intellectual openness, prosperity, peaceful cooperation, and mutual respect. With roots in the classical liberal tradition, IHS supports a diverse community of liberal scholars—classical liberal, left-of-center liberal, and small-government conservative scholars—committed to advancing progress on foundational questions and key challenges shaping the course of the 21st century.
The Opportunity
Reporting to President and CEO Dr. Emily Chamlee-Wright and serving as a member of her senior leadership team, IHS seeks a Managing Director who will set the strategic direction for the development team’s long-term, sustainable growth. IHS raised over $21 million in 2020, and as its organizational strategy has evolved, the Institute is better positioned to engage a broader philanthropic constituency that includes and reaches beyond those who have traditionally supported IHS. The ability to develop an innovative strategic engagement plan and successfully build and grow IHS’s fundraising program to its greatest potential is essential.
