Chief Development Officer Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston, Massachusetts

The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) engages more people in the remarkable variety and wonder of classical music than any other symphonic organization in the world, bringing music into the lives of millions of people every year. Unmatched in the size and scope of its activities, the BSO is known for its diverse programs, passionate performances, and tradition of innovation. Now in its 138th season, the Boston Symphony Orchestra continues to be at the forefront of artistic excellence.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra commissions works from today's most important composers; its summer season at Tanglewood is among the world's most important music festivals; it helps develop future audiences through BSO Youth Concerts and educational outreach programs involving the entire Boston community; and, during the Tanglewood season, it operates the Tanglewood Music Center, one of the world's most important training grounds for young professional-caliber musicians. The Boston Symphony Chamber Players, made up of BSO principals, are known worldwide, and the Boston Pops Orchestra sets an international standard for performances of lighter music.

Making classical and popular music accessible and relevant to today’s listening audiences, the BSO reaches listeners, not only through its concert performances in Boston and at Tanglewood, but also via the internet, radio, television, educational programs, recordings, and tours.

The Opportunity

As an integral part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s senior management team, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for the development and operational execution of overall strategy for philanthropic activities supporting the BSO’s mission and aspirations for the future. The CDO will be a dynamic role model for a team of approximately 36 individuals, including seven direct reports, and bring significant experience working in senior development roles, ideally in the arts and culture arena. With a transformational campaign on the horizon, the CDO will possess the vision and innovative thinking to lead the BSO to a new level of philanthropic success.
