The American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) provides leadership to advance science and its application to the legal system. The organization promotes professionalism, integrity, competency, and education, as well as fosters research, improves practice, and encourages collaboration in the forensic sciences. AAFS’s more than 6,600 diverse members include physicians, attorneys, dentists, anthropologists, and digital evidence experts from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide. These distinguished members actively practice and, in many cases, teach and research forensic science.

The Academy’s Annual Scientific Meeting highlights the most current information, research, and updates in the forensic sciences and showcases cutting-edge technology and services to assist professionals in their work. AAFS publishes the Journal of Forensic Sciences, an internationally recognized scientific journal, and operates the Academy Standards Board, which maintains a national registry of forensics standards. The Academy also operates the Humanitarian and Human Rights Resource Center, using AAFS’s assets to promote the application of forensic science and medicine principles to global humanitarian and human rights projects in need of assistance, and partners with the Forensic Sciences Foundation, the nonprofit educational, scientific, and research arm of the Academy.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the AAFS Board of Directors, the Executive Director acts as the organization’s chief executive officer and is responsible for the executive management and administrative leadership of AAFS, including the Forensic Sciences Foundation. The Executive Director will implement policies, procedures, and programs approved by the AAFS’s Board of Directors, President, or membership in accordance with the AAFS bylaws. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in non-profit strategic organizational leadership and planning, preferably in those containing various membership levels and qualifications. Ability to advocate for legislative initiatives to benefit the organization also would be an asset.
